Our theme at Wit & Delight this February is all about focusing only on what you love. While the things we love have a lot of power, I think it can be just as insightful to reflect on the things we love. No love.
Today I share three reviews of beauty products. These are products that I was excited to try that ultimately fell short of the hype.
For anyone considering a purchase in this field, I thought it might be helpful to share my personal experience with these products. With that being said, please remember that this is an opinion and these types of products will never be one size fits all. You may have a different experience with them, but I hope you find these beauty product reviews interesting to read either way.
PS: If you like this post, you might also enjoy reading This on three expensive products I bought that weren’t worth it.
1. Lip Sculpt REFY Lip Liner
Price: $26
When I got this product: December 2023
Expectations: I was looking for a long lasting lip liner in a nude color. I heard about this on TikTok and it seemed like just the product I wanted.
What disappointed me: I liked this product at first, but after several uses, the lip liner started to fall apart. It seems to be a problem with the packaging – the way the lid closes over the lip liner seems to cause the product to break and fall apart. I still use it from time to time because I like the color, but the application process often fails me because the tip of the product is no longer shaped as it should be.
2. StackedSkincare Microneedling Tool
Price: $89
When I got this product: August 2019
Expectations: I was hoping this product would improve skin tone and texture with the convenience of home use.
What disappointed me: I would use this microneedling tool right before applying my moisturizing products. I saw minimal improvements in my skin tone and texture and initially liked this product. However, once the needles dulled, I found that they can actually tear through the skin rather than gently pierce it. While you can replace the roller head (something the brand recommends), I was not comfortable risking damaging my skin with subsequent use.
I have since spoken to my dermatologist about this and her opinion is that it is not a great type of tool to use at home as you can risk damaging your skin if not used correctly. Now I prefer to get microneedled professionally. I’m sure at-home microneedling works well for some people, but over time, I realized it wasn’t for me personally.
3. RMS Beauty Wild With Desire Lipstick
Price: $30
When I got this product: 2018 (They gave it to me).
Expectations: I was excited to try a new to me clean lipstick that I hoped would feel hydrated on my lips.
What disappointed me: I have tried many lipsticks that I like for the color but in the end I don’t use them because they dry too much. This particular lipstick is very drying. I find it difficult to apply and uncomfortable to wear alone. I have used it from time to time because I like the color, but I have to apply it with a brush and layer moisturizing lip gloss on top of it.
