Sausage balls are one of those crowd-pleasers that everyone loves.

Whether you serve them at a Christmas morning breakfast or brunch, add them as the perfect appetizer for a game day party, these snacks are a tried-and-true classic.

Traditionally, most sausage ball recipes call for Bisquick baking mix. Using Bisquick can make things easier for you… if you have it handy, that is!

But not everyone has a box of Bisquick in their pantry, and some people don’t want to use something with a lot of additives.

So you will be happy to know that you can make delicious sausage balls without Bisquick! They’re just as tasty, but without the ingredients you can’t pronounce.

They are a big hit!

Sausage Balls without Bisquick Mix

There are many different varieties of sausage balls, using different types of sausage and different types of cheese.

So if you already have a recipe you love, but just need a way to substitute something else for the Bisquick, feel free to make any adjustments you’d like.

But if you don’t already have a sausage balls recipe, this easy recipe uses simple ingredients to create delicious, flavorful bites that everyone will love.

How to Make Cheesy Sausage Balls Without Bisquick

It is easier than you think to prepare this simple recipe!

Ingredients you will need:

  • Flour with yeast
  • Vegetable shortening (such as Crisco)
  • sharp cheddar cheese
  • breakfast sausage
  • Milk

How to make homemade sausage balls:

Make the Bisquick substitute. Since we are not using baking mix, we must make a substitute to achieve the best results.

In the bowl of a food processor, combine some of the self-rising flour with some of the shortening. Pulse several times to combine into small pieces.

Combine ingredients. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, combine the flour mixture, shredded cheese, and raw breakfast sausage. Mix on low speed until just combined.

If you don’t have a stand mixer, you can combine everything by hand in a large bowl.

Add milk, if necessary. Add milk, a tablespoon at a time, while mixing on low speed, until the mixture holds together well.

Take out and bake. Using a cookie scoop or spoon, scoop the mixture into 1-inch balls. Place the raw sausage balls on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.

Bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.

Remove cookie sheet from oven and allow to cool slightly before serving hot, or allow to cool completely and serve at room temperature.

Notes and adaptations for these easy sausage balls:

  • Sausage balls are infinitely customizable! You can make spicy sausage balls by choosing spicy sausage instead of mild or medium ground sausage, or add a little cayenne pepper to the mix. Feel free to change the type of cheese, too. Do you want to add some seasonings? Try a teaspoon of garlic powder, half a teaspoon of onion powder, and a tablespoon of dried parsley. Or serve them with your favorite sauce!
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days.
  • If you don’t have self-rising flour on hand, you can make your own using all-purpose flour.
  • Freeze raw sausage balls on a baking sheet in the freezer, then transfer to a freezer bag and store for 3-4 months. When ready to bake, let them sit on the baking sheet at room temperature for 15-20 minutes, then bake.

Yield: approx. 48 sausage balls

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of self-rising flour

  • 2 1/2 tablespoons shortening

  • 8 oz sharp cheddar cheese, grated (about 2 cups)

  • 1 pound breakfast sausage

  • 1-4 tablespoons milk, if needed

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Add self-rising flour and shortening to the bowl of a food processor. Pulse together until mixture forms small crumbs.
  3. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine the flour mixture, shredded cheese, and breakfast sausage.
  4. Mix on low speed until just combined.
  5. If needed, mix in the milk, one tablespoon at a time, up to four tablespoons, to help the mixture stick better.
  6. Use a small cookie scoop or spoon to scoop out rounds of the mixture, forming balls.
  7. Place the balls on a prepared baking sheet and transfer to the preheated oven. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until golden brown and cooked through.
