We’re doing a series of product reviews here at Wit & Delight, where I offer more in-depth information on tried-and-true products I’ve been using for months (or years) that have changed my daily routine for the better.
Next on the list? My review of the Dyson Airwrap that I’ve been using since early 2020. Let’s dig into the review and please let me know in the comments if you have any further questions.
It is a hair styling tool that comes with a variety of styling attachments that curl, straighten, wave or volumize hair. It allows you to dry and style your hair without damaging it with extreme heat.
When and why did I start using it?
I started using it in early 2020. I had reached a point where I wanted my hair back to that pre-kids shine and vibrancy. Before I bought the Dyson, I never got used to giving myself a blowout and mostly walked around with curly hair on the back of my head for decades. Out of sight, out of mind?
I knew that I wanted some kind of all-in-one tool that would allow me to straighten my hair while it was wet. I had seen reviews of the Revlon styler (which is much lower in price and is something a lot of people swear by) and had used a similar product in my twenties but in my experience it caused tons of breakage and I stopped using after a time.
I also wanted to find a way to extend the length of my blowouts I noticed that after having my hair professionally styled, it looked good for FOUR days. I knew that if I could find a way to replicate that look at home, it would save a lot of time and energy.
how do i use it
I have my routine down to a science! These are the most common steps I follow for a daily blowout (you can also check them out in the video below!).
Step One: Add Products
After washing my hair, I will brush it and add products to protect my hair from heat. Lately, I have been using Olaplex No. 6 Reparative Styling Creme and Olaplex No. 7 Bonding Oil.
Step Two: Style Bangs
I always start the styling process with my bangs. They need to be very wet to tame them properly and keep them manageable for a few days.
I brush them forward with a brush and then use the pre-styling blow dryer to shape my bangs. I use a brush to pull them to one side of my head and apply a bit of heat, then repeat this step to the other side. I then place my brush under them and apply more heat. If they look a bit flat, I use a round brush to shape them. I then part them down the middle and let my hair air dry for a while.
Step Three: Style the Hair in Sections
Since I have such thick hair, I comb out the bottom section first. This is where my hair is curliest and, for me, it is the most important step to achieve a professional look.
I place the round brush at the base of a 3” wide section of hair for a few seconds. I then wrap my hair around the brush and let it dry for ten seconds. Then, holding the top of my hair, I unwrap the hair from the brush; This helps me not to pull my hair and lose volume. I will repeat this process on all my hair.
The unruly hairs in the back need a bit of a tug to help loosen the curl, so I run the brush through those sections completely a few times just before my hair is almost completely dry.
Step Four – Add Finishing Products
I apply a bit of styling product to the ends to add some texture and a bit of dry shampoo to my bangs to soak up any oil that might start to build up throughout the day. Help the blowout last longer!
How has Dyson Airwrap held up over time?
The Airwrap itself looks like new. I have cleaned the brushes a handful of times, along with the filter. I have found that the product requires very little maintenance and nothing has broken, come loose, or is missing. It’s the quality you’d expect from a Dyson product, and the only acceptable result (in my opinion) of spending a lot of money on a styling tool. The iron I bought the same month as the Dyson has been slowly dying since June and no longer heats up as fast or holds high heat. It’s nice to see that difference when I think about the investment I made.
I have to say that I do not use every single accessory and have not found much use for curling barrels. I tried to figure out how to use them, but as someone who couldn’t hold a brush AND dry my hair at the same time before, I might not be the person for this type of tool. That is my biggest disappointment. Also, the leather case feels a bit much, although it is BEAUTIFUL and well made. I just like to dump my tools in baskets and call it a day, and my current case is collecting dust under my sink. Maybe I’ll use it when my mornings feel less rushed… maybe fifteen years from now when my kids head off to college.
Should you buy the Dyson Airwrap?
This product is definitely an investment, so it’s something to consider before you buy it. If you have hair that has been difficult to style in the past, are looking to replicate a professional style at home, or have severely damaged hair and want to switch to a styling product that is gentler on it, this product is definitely for you. . . If you are low maintenance and don’t like wasting time doing blowouts, I would say skip it and use a less expensive option until you know it will be routine use.
